AGRICULTURE: GOVERNMENT MUST TAKE ACTION ON CONCENTRATED MILK PROTEIN

OTTAWA – Today, New Democrat Agriculture critic Ruth Ellen Brosseau (Berthier—Maskinongé) reminded the Liberal government that during the campaign, milk producers asked them to address the issue of imported protein concentrates from the United States in the first 100 days of their mandate.

“Since taking office, the Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister haven’t said a word on this issue – total silence. When stakeholders make this kind of request, it’s because it’s urgent,” said Brosseau. “Producers have the right to know if the government is taking this issue seriously.”

Currently, this problem costs some producers up to $50,000. Tomorrow is the 100th day of the Liberal government’s mandate – but producers are still waiting.

“Farmers are worried – some farms are losing around $1000 a week and that’s unacceptable,” said Brosseau. “The Liberal government must take immediate action to support our local farms. Put words into action and defend our farmers.
