ASHTON GETS EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE REVIEW UNDERWAY

OTTAWA – The NDP Critic for Jobs, Employment and Workforce Development Niki Ashton (Churchill – Kewatinook Aski) has continued to lead the way in undertaking a review of Employment Insurance, during a parliamentary committee today.

"The EI system is broken and many unemployed Canadians are hurting. We need to listen to Canadians and fix EI immediately," said Ashton. "Our committee review will give us a chance to hear from Canadians about what they are facing and what action they need from the federal government right now."

Access to EI has hit a dramatic low of 39% of applicants receiving it. The current crisis in the West is amplifying calls to revisit the program and ensure that all workers have access to Employment Insurance when they need it.

"Canadians need a program that can respond to today's challenging economic times. I'm looking forward to working together, with Canadians, to push the Government to fix EI now," Ashton concluded.
