Awareness to Food Waste

Canadians waste the equivalent of approximately $31 billion a year on food that goes to landfills and composting;

  • In Canada, 6 million tonnes of food is wasted each year, which works out to 127 kg per inhabitant;

  • Most food waste occurs toward the end of the food supply chain, with processors, retailers and consumers;

  • Food waste has significant impacts environmentally, socially and economically;

     WE, THE UNDERSIGNED CITIZENS OF CANADA, CALL UPON THE HOUSE OF COMMONS:

  • To declare an annual National Food Waste Awareness Day;

  • To determine solutions to food waste through a national awareness campaign;

  • To reduce the environmental impact of producing food that is not consumed by encouraging more sustainable food production methods.
