IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND EXPLOITATION OF WOMEN AND GIRLS

OTTAWA – New Democrats MPs Murray Rankin (Victoria) and Karine Trudel (Jonquière) are urging the federal government to act immediately in order protect at-risk women and girls from exploitation.

In a letter sent to the Minister of Justice, the NDP MPs point to the recent disappearance of three teenage girls in Laval as an example of the current reality of human trafficking in Canada.

Rankin and Trudel are calling for Bill C-452, which was adopted in the last parliament, to be immediately enacted. The bill targets human traffickers by establishing consecutive sentences, reversing the burden of proof and permitting the confiscation of property.

“All that is required is a simple decision from Cabinet so that the legislation, supported by all parties, comes into force. Human trafficking is a complex issue that requires action on several fronts but this bill is certainly a step in the right direction,” said Trudel. “By reinforcing the Criminal Code, we will give prosecutors more tools to target pimps. It’s time to act now to protect women and girls in Canada.”
