NDP HONOURS PERSONS DAY WITH CALL FOR GENDER EQUITY IN PARLIAMENT
NDP Critic for the Status of Women, Sheila Malcolmson, issued the following statement today:
“On this day in 1929, the efforts of five courageous women lead to the recognition of women as legal “persons” in Canada.
It was a landmark victory for Canadian women, but 87 years later much work more needs to be done to build a more equal Canada for women and girls.
Canada ranks 60th in the world when it comes to gender equity in Parliament. At only 26 percent, Canada does not even meet the UN’s minimum threshold of female legislators required to ensure that public policy accurately reflects the needs of women.
That is why New Democrats are calling on all members of Parliament to vote in support of the Candidate Gender Equity Act tomorrow.
Good intentions must be met with concrete action. It’s time to continue the work of the famous five, honour our history of trailblazing Canadian women, and ensure that our parliament reflects our population."
