NDP motion to tackle youth employment adopted

New Democrats are pleased that their motion to address youth unemployment across Canada was passed unanimously by the House of Commons Finance Committee.

“This is a victory for Canadian youth who are struggling to find paid work,” said NDP Finance critic Peggy Nash (Parkdale – High Park). “This motion is a practical first step that will help tackle youth unemployment. Our young people want to work and it is our job as parliamentarians to help them do so.”

The NDP motion calls for a study of youth employment across Canada. The youth unemployment rate is nearly double the national average and the Conservatives have been slow to take action to address this problem.

“Creating quality, well-paid jobs for youth has long been a priority for New Democrats and I’m pleased that all parties are working together to put Canadian youth first”, said NDP deputy Finance critic Guy Caron (Rimouski-Neigette – Témiscouata – Les Basques).
