NDP Statement on Sudden Resignation of Canada's Chief Statistician

Erin Weir, NDP Critic for Public Services, made the following statement on the sudden resignation of Canada’s Chief Statistician, Wayne Smith:

"This resignation is a very troubling development and raises many concerns regarding Statistics Canada.

The Liberals promised, in black and white, to restore Statistics Canada's independence. It's clear from Mr. Smith’s comments that the current Liberal government is responsible for compromising that independence.

The government must immediately investigate all concerns raised regarding Shared Services Canada. New Democrats will continue to defend the independence of Statistics Canada and fact-based decision making free from political interference."
