NDP STANDS UP FOR WORKERS, CALLS OUT LIBERAL INACTION ON PAY SYSTEM SCANDAL

OTTAWA — New Democrats are continuing to call on the Liberal government to take action on the broken Phoenix pay system. Ever since the new system went online, many federal employees have been underpaid or not paid at all.

“The problems with the Phoenix pay system have been going on for too long. It is just unacceptable that public servants cannot get paid on time,” said Erin Weir (Regina – Lewan) NDP Critic for Public Services and Procurement. “The government is placing some of its own employees in a very tough situation where they can’t pay their mortgage or have to buy their groceries with a credit card.”

For months now, New Democrats have been raising the issue with both the Minister of Public Services and Procurement and the President of the Treasury Board during Question Period and in committee. In committee, the Minister of Public Services and Procurement claimed that the pay problems were due to the transition so issues were to be expected.

“What’s worse is hearing the government’s excuses and claims that it’s just a few employees. Reports of people not being paid are coming from numerous sources. It’s not just one exception,” said Erin Weir. “Things are so bad that Canada’s largest federal union is criticizing the government’s inaction on this issue.”

New Democrats are calling on the Liberal government to come up with a plan to fix this mess immediately.

“Liberals promised to do things differently and to respect the public service,” added Erin Weir. “Paying its own employees is certainly the minimum the government can do.”
