Systemic discrimination must end in Canada

January 26, 2016

NDP Indigenous Affairs critic Charlie Angus (Timmins-James Bay) made the following statement in the decision by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal regarding First Nations child welfare:

"Today's historic decision recognizes a wrong that has been perpetuated for too long in Canada: discrimination against First Nations children exists, it is systemic and it must end.

The horrific stories detailed in this case are the result of decades of underfunding and neglect. Worse yet, today's decision makes clear that the Department knew that their program resulted in families being broken up, but they failed to act to fix this social upheaval.

There are now more First Nations children in care than there were at the height of the residential schools.

The government needs to act immediately to right this wrong by instructing its lawyers not to appeal today's decision and by delivering the money needed to equitably fund these important services in the upcoming budget.

We all have a responsibility to ensure this historical failure is met with long-term structural solutions that outlive any government or any Minister.

New Democrats are ready to help right this historic wrong. We cannot fail another generation of First Nations children.”
